Residential Garage Door FAQ
Overhead Door Company of Portland opened in 1929. That means we have spent close to 100 years installing thousands of garage doors and garage door openers in homes across Greater Portland and Vancouver. Our years in business provided us time to find the very best garage doors and parts available and learn who to hire to give our customers top-notch service.
Our experience has taught us that you have questions when it comes to your garage door and here we will answer some of the ones we hear most often.
What types of residential garage doors are available?
We are your one-stop solution with garage doors that feature premium materials, superior craftsmanship, and innovative functions. Our collection of garage doors includes popular styles like carriage house, modern aluminum with light filtering glass, and traditional steel and wood. We have a door to match your home’s aesthetics while providing the safety and energy efficiency you need.
What repair services do you provide for residential garage doors?
Our garage door repair services team has expertise in repairing all components of your garage door. We repair and replace garage door parts such as worn-out rollers, hardware, rails, gears, and operator motors to silence noisy operations and have the door operate smoothly again. Problems with the door not closing? We’ll address the opener operator settings and inspect the photo eye sensors to make needed adjustments. When the door no longer lifts, we’ll take a look at the torsion spring and replace it if needed. In fact, we custom-build our springs to fit the exact specifications of your garage door. Whatever’s not working, we’ll fix it.
What is included in your garage door maintenance program?
Overhead Door Company makes it easy to keep your garage door in perfect shape by offering our maintenance program. Enrollment is free, and membership includes discounts on labor, service, repair, and priority scheduling. Residential Maintenance services include: Diagnostics; Adjustments, Alignment, and Balancing; Lubrication of All Moving Parts; and a Full Safety Check. Our trained technicians will examine your Garage Door and make expert recommendations on a necessary replacement for the longevity of your garage door operator.
How long is the process for installing a new garage door?
Several variables factor into the length of time it will take to install a garage door. Our garage door installers can give you an estimated time after their initial consultation, but the size of the door, the complexity of the installation, and even the weather can play into how long the job will take. Our professional garage door installers will first remove the old door and then start installing new tracks, springs, cables, and rollers, as well as a new opener (if recommended). The garage door will finally be tested to ensure everything is functioning correctly.
How do I know if I need to repair or replace my garage door?
Most garage doors last from 15 to 30 years, depending on how heavy the usage, environmental factors, and how well you maintain them. You can look for signs of wear like cracks, warping, loose mountings, and worn cables. Does the door make unusual noises, is it suddenly hard to lift manually, does it still reverse if an obstacle is in the way? Is it just unusually loud? Any of these problems may indicate it’s time for a new door, but call us to do a thorough inspection and help you determine if a full or section replacement or repair is the solution.
What options do I have for customizing my garage door?
The DoorView® Visualizer tool allows you to visualize and customize garage doors on your very own garage door. It’s simple. Upload an image of your home and the size of your garage door, then start selecting from our wide variety of colors, materials, window size and glass style, and even hinges and handles. Find the garage door that matches your home’s architectural style and your taste.
What should I do if my garage door doesn't open or close properly?
If your garage door is not closing all the way the issue could be with the photo eye sensor. Check for obstacles or if the sensor has been knocked out of place or damaged. If the garage door doesn’t open, the torsion spring may have broken or the operator is malfunctioning. Contact us for a professional diagnosis and we’ll tackle any needed repairs or replacements to have your door going back up and down.
Are there any safety features included in your garage doors?
Our garage doors offer photo eye sensors that alert the system of obstacles and automatically reverse the door to prevent items (or pets!) from getting stuck or crushed under the door. The electric opener is also equipped so that if the door does come down onto something it will feel the obstruction and stop or reverse so the obstruction can be cleared before closing again. The door operator also has a manual release to allow for manual opening and closing of the door. Ideal for when the power goes out or if the door opener malfunctions.
How often should I have my garage door serviced?
We recommend servicing your garage door at least once a year to maintain safety and efficiency and extend the door’s life. During a preventive maintenance visit, our technicians will thoroughly review all the components to diagnose any issues that may be developing and do a full safety check. All moving parts will be lubricated and necessary adjustments, alignments, and balancing tasks your system needs will be performed.
