So. You chose your garage door. You chose the collection, the material, the style. You’re almost done. But now – the color. Or maybe you just painted the house and need the garage door to keep up. Or maybe it just is time for a change. Whatever the reason, picking out a garage door is an important decision. What do you want your facade to say? Color choices for garage doors are often lamented, but perhaps some of our recommendations can help you decide.
1) Don’t match your front door and garage door.
Generally, your front door wants to be the focal point of the house. Most of the time, you don’t want the color of your garage to pull everyone’s eye. Especially if your front door is a bold color, it can be overwhelming on a garage door. There are also many other colors around your home from which you can pull inspiration – driveway, stones, flowers, trees, sand, water, a mountain in the background… Picture the full setting of your home and try not to be seduced by the front door.
2) But maybe do match your garage doors and your house!
That seamless look can not only help blend the giant area of a garage door, but it can also make your house appear larger. Rather than separating the garage from the rest of the house, this blend creates one unified, expansive footprint. You can even go so far as to paint the trim surrounding your garage door to match.
3) If you are considering selling your home, stay inside the box.
If your garage door has an unusual color or is two-toned, it likely won’t have the same curb appeal as a single-colored door in a clean, neutral color. If you are committed to the house, we would never encourage you to subdue your aesthetic, but it can be significant if you are planning to put your home on the market.
4) Consider your neighborhood.
Do you want your home to draw attention or be part of a harmonious street? Either is fine! But if most of your neighbors all have brown garage doors, you might consider that before painting your door bright green. Don’t try to copy your neighbor, but one nice trick is to try to be a bridge between the garages on either side of your home. For example, if the neighbor on one side has a white door and on the left it’s blue, perhaps a gray will bring the whole street together!
5) When in doubt, stick with the tried and true.
One of the most common choices is to match your garage door color to the color of the windows and trim on the house. It may not be the unique look you were hoping for, but it will be clean and attractive and save you loads of time looking at color swatches.
Popular Garage Door Color Choices
Repeatedly, we see the same colors topping the list of garage door colors. Don’t feel any need to stick to the more common colors! But perhaps this will be a place to start your thought process.
White – A classic. By far the most popular color for garage doors, white tends to complement most any other colors. Since there are so many design choices available today, consider staying with a nice white and letting the design of the door do the talking.
Soft Gray – Gray is chic and classy. It is still bright, but softer than white. It also lets your garage door sit back a little bit with more subtlety.
Black – Another classic. But one that feels more modern. If it goes well with your home, it can elevate your home (and more easily hide marks on the door!).
Beige – This will most likely help your door blend into the rest of the home, especially if you have a brick or stone house. Its effect is similar to the soft gray, but may be better suited for your home!
Walnut Brown – A warm brown. This has a polished (and possibly even, expensive) feel. Browns come in a lot of shades. Walnut seems to be the one that stays modern, while being inviting and warm and homey.
Your garage door is a huge part of the facade of your home. Not only will it be what others see, but it is what you will see every time you come home! Make sure you will find its appearance satisfying and inviting, and whether you are renovating or installing a new door – give some thought to the color. A seemingly simple choice that can have a significant effect and value!
