Making Sure Your Garage Door Shines
Your garage door works hard. It takes a ton of abuse – from rain, sun, wear, poorly-aimed basketballs, and more. It is also highly visible, so you want it to weather that storm and still look great. It is easy to overlook your garage door when cleaning your home, but you may want to get that on your annual list. Not only will cleaning your garage door make it shine, but it will also keep any buildup of dirt or oil from making its way into the tracks, which can ultimately cause mechanical issues.
So, let’s get to it! Here are some tips:
-
- Wash the door surfaces and windows with a mild liquid soap and water at a concentration of one cup of soap in five gallons of warm water. (A harsh soap or abrasive detergents can damage the painted or the seals on the door.) Wash both the interior and exterior using a sponge, cloth, or soft brush.
- After washing, rinse with water and allow the door to dry completely. Do not, though, us e a pressure washer, as it, too, can damage the door.
- If you need to spot-clean an area for deeper dirt or stains, you can use a diluted bleach and water solution. Follow that by again rising the affected areas.
- After washing, your door can be waxed with a good quality car wax – especially on steel doors.
This also may be a good time to inspect your door, lubricate hinges, and perform additional garage door maintenance!
You may also repeat the process on the inside of the door to help ensure that any unwanted buildup of dirt or oil on that side of the door is removed. This will also help decrease the risk that dirt will become trapped inside of the garage door’s tracks.
